Dive Grenada Trip Advisor - Review 2011

Just like to share a nice comment from a customer who dived with Dive Grenada earlier in 2011:

Probably the best dive shop on planet earth!!!!! Every detail of this shop helps to distinguish it from the competition. From the amazing location, to the knowledgeable staff, the clean well maintained boat, and the smaller groups (usually no more than 8). I enjoyed the personalized service, and the commitment to safety, proactively ensuring that every individual on the boat was not only getting the diving experience they desired, but would return form that experience unharmed!

I can't believe that I've read a negative comment on this sight based on there being too much focus on safety. Being a world traveled PADI Instructor I applaud this shop for adhering to safety guidelines, this is how they insure everyone comes back in the same condition as they left!!!!!

I have nothing but incredible things to say about Phil, Helen, Gary, Neal, and Kojak, and have been talking about my time in Grenada nonstop since I returned, you would be hard pressed to find a finer group of people anywhere!

Underwater Cleanup 2011

On Friday September 30th 2011, Dive Grenada joined forces with a student led group of St George’s University students (ECO – Education. Conservation. Outreach) and organized an underwater clean up as part of the Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Clean Up. The Clean up took place in Dragon Bay, part of Grenada’s Marine Protected Area and showed that not even ‘Protected Areas’ are protected from human derived pollution. Participants included four divers (from both ECO and Dive Grenada), 3 snorkelers (from ECO) and 3 other ECO members. Items of garbage collected including plastic bags and bottles, toys, wrappings, tin cans and beverages, shoes and clothing and even a tire! The most prevalent item were the tin cans and beverages which show that everything on the land ends up in the ocean! The data collected from the cleanup will be recorded and sent to the Ocean Conservancy to be compiled into the International Report for 2011.

Grenada's Underwater Sculpture Park - Bench

Dive Grenada, Grenada's favourite dive and snorkel operator has just sponsored and installed the 'Bench' in Grenada's Underwater Sculpture Park.This unique new piece was the idea of Phil Saye owner of Dive Grenada who thought it would be very quirky to have a place to sit and chill out underwater while enjoying the underwater sculptures. He said,"we are hoping to see many images appear around the world of people taking a rest on the bench here in Grenada".

Manta Ray encounter - right outside the dive shop

Dive Grenada had an enviable morning by all ocean lovers, as we were greeted by one of the ocean's giants. We spent the first hour and half of work swiming right outside the office with a Manta Ray that playfully swam in circles around us! He'd gently nudge us with his wing and take sharp turns to suddenly dive down underneath us. At times when we feared that we had seen the last of him, he would suddenly appear, gliding straight towards you. Such a majestic, harmless creature, manta rays are filter feeders and thus contain no teeth. They simply glide near the surface and open their mouths to allow the water that is concentrated with its food of choice (plankton or krill) to flow through its mouth and over its gills. Although they are so harmless, they are unfortunatley being overfished in other parts of the world and so should be protected so that everyone can get the thrilling opportunity that we experience this morning. Days like these at Dive Grenada make work, snorkelling and diving, even that more spectacular! What a wonderful christmas present!!

Dive Grenada makes history!!

Last weekend, Dive Grenada made history! At just 12 years of age, Calum Noel proudly gained his PADI Advanced Diver Certification and became the youngest Grenadian to do so on the island.

Having first learnt to dive just a year earlier his infectious enthusiasm for the sport was enough to convince his father and now dive buddy, Mr Douglas Noel, to join him in working towards their advanced diving qualification.

Guided by Phil Saye,owner of Dive Grenada, the two as have exppanded their diving skills and knowledge with a series of adventurous dives. These dives included navigation traning, a thrilling opportunity to dive in a current 'a bit like flying', the exploration of a shipwreck and learning to find and identify some of Grenada's fantastic marine life.

Calum and his father are now looking forward to next weekend, when they will be taking their first outing as Advanced Divers on Shark Reef - renowned for its sharks, turtles, sting-rays and much much more.

It really is never too young to get started in diving and as Doug and Calum have found, its a great family activity.

All in one go!

Yesterday, Christina (a regular diver with us) was celebrating her birthday, and as such, requested the morning dive to be 'Shark Reef.' The second dive, we decided, would be Kahonee.

Shark Reef is a lovely drift dive on the Atlantic side of the island.
Kahonee is a beatiful shallow dive, made up channels that run through the site. This site lies on the west coast of the island, in the Caribbean waters.

Within minutes of entering the water on their first dive, they came upon a large Green turtle. Through-out the course of the dive, they went on to see a massive Spotted eagle ray, magnificent sea urchin and a Hawksbill turtle.
On the second dive they saw another Hawksbill turtle and a baby green turtle.

Needless to say, they all came back to shore full of smiles - Just another day diving in the sunny Caribbean, with Dive Grenada.

Grenada's Underwater Sculpture Park

Phil Saye, owner of Dive Grenada, is leading the action group for the regeneration and the future development of Grenada's very unique Underwater Sculpture Park. The park is ideal for both snorkellers and divers and lies in a beautifully scenic bay along the west coast of the island.

The underwater Sculpture Park was originally designed by Jason Taylor, an English sculpture and personal friend to Phil. It was created in an effort to reduce the environmental pressure from diving and snorkelling on other sites in the Marine Protected Area.

The sculpture park was a complete success, and a variety of marine life repopulated the Marine Protected Area (in which the sculpture park is situated.) However, a recent storm struck the island in 2008, and many of the sculptures were badly damaged.

To begin his attempt to regenerate the park, Phil Saye has begun to 'clean up' the area. He has removed some pieces of sculptures that were not savable and dug up those that were buried by sand, such as Grace Reef. He is also in the process of organizing new and more sculptures to be placed among the park, which hopefully, with the help of the public and authorities will become a reality and rejuvinate our marine life.
